One important thing to note before anything else is that you do not have to play the previous two Far Cry’s to play Far Cry 3, as the story is totally different to the other two. Yey!
Far Cry 3 is Ubisoft’s latest (and last) title of 2012. Has the game lived up to the hype? Or is it just another typical FPS that has been thrown in the mix? Read the review to find out…
Do you know the definition of insanity? Well, it’s basically Far Cry 3. Far Cry 3 is an open world FPS where you are on holiday with your friends in an exotic island. As expected, the holiday doesn’t last… As Jason, your main objective is to find your friends, which have been captured by pirates. It’s not all that easy though, as one of the main Villains in the game, Vaas, has your friends. Jason starts his journey into the insanity with little experience, but as the game develops, you see Jason develop into a much more mature and experienced character.
The voice acting is top notch. A great example of this is the voice of Vaas. The realism and emotions of the character really do come across well due to the superb voice acting throughout every piece of dialogue. It isn’t all dandy though, almost robotic lip syncing throughout the dialogue lets the visual aspect of the characters down.

Visually, the game looks stunning. Maybe it’s the bright colors, or even the bright blue water, but visually, the game is flawless. The great visuals are also backed up, as I never had a single frame rate issue, or any other issue while playing Far Cry 3.
In most RPG style games, you need to work in order to obtain, and there is no exception here! Far Cry 3 has a crafting system, which makes you craft all kind of cool equipment which will be vital on your Journey. You can craft all sorts of upgradable items for Jason such as bigger wallets to store money in, Bigger bagpacks to store more items, medicines and much more. To craft, you need to hunt. Hunting is one of the big themes in the game. Especially if your the one who loves to upgrade everything. Hunting involves killing animals ranging from Pigs to Sharks. Once killed, you can skin the animals to get the skin. Hunting may not be the most fun thing to do in Far Cry 3, but you sure are rewarded once you get round to crafting.
Hate having to run to every single place you want to get to? No worry’s, far cry has it all! What do I mean? Well for starters, there is a ton of transportation options such as fast travelling (Once you have been to the destination which can be fast traveled too), gliding and a ton of vehicles such as quad bikes and trucks to get you to where you want in no time. Vehicles feel great, and definitely bring a realism feel to how the cars should handle in a first person view. When you are driving down a massive slope, you really don’t know how steep of a drop it is, which is exactly what I expect while driving in a first person view! As you progress through the game, you will eventually unlock a wingsuit in which you get to keep on your back all the time. There’s also some water vehicles too such as jet skis and boats which help you travel between the two islands.

Far Cry 3 also comes packed with lots of minigames such as quadbike timed challenges and poker. It’s vital that you complete every minigame if you want to get skillpoints and cash really quickly. As you unlock different sections of the map by climbing the radio towers, you need to claim outposts to make the land safe. Outposts consist of a wide range of enemy’s such as snipers, heavy gunners and normal enemy’s in which you need to kill them all to claim the oupost. Once you have claimed the outpost, your crew (The Rakyats) will come to the outpost and you will have some bounty’s on the wanted board which you can earn XP for upon completing them. XP earns you skill points in which you can spend to gain a new ability.

As you complete minigames, missions and bountys, you will earn money to spend on whatever weapons you can afford. The weapon range is quite lengthy too. Including weapons like the crossbow and the flamethrower, weapons can be either unlocked by disabling the radio towers, or bought with your hard earned cash. You can also add mods to your guns such as silencers and red dot sights.
As Jason progresses further on his Journey on the island he meets different characters, some good, some bad, and some who are just pure crazy. In the result of all this, Jason starts to put his friends second and focuses on getting revenge on Vaas for what he has done to Jason’s friends. While Jason is a really good character, his actions towards others do not exactly reflect on what emotions he claims to of felt after.
The story combined with all the little minigames and sidemissions lead to a game which you will get a good 20-30 hours worth of gameplay from if you go for the 100% completion.
Far cry 3 also has a multiplayer and co-op mode, both of which are good, but nothing special. Co-op can be played with 2-4 people online, or just on your own. Co-op features 6 missions which you and your co-op buddies play with an all new set of characters and a different objective from the singleplayer experience. The co-op does not have the freedom of exploration like the singleplayer, which is probably the biggest letdown of the mode considering open world singleplayer kicks ass. Despite this, the co-op missions are a blast if you have friends or players which work like a team. If they don’t, you better play the co-op offline or you will be getting nowhere.
The multiplayer aspect of the game is quite fun too, just not as unique or different to any other shooter out there. Far Cry 3 features your standard Team Death Match mode with a variety of maps which you will be playing. A character progression system is also included which enables you to unlock cool stuff such as guns and boosters for you character class. The real problem with the multiplayer is the lag issues which seem to affect online games massively. When shooting a person, you expect them to be dead once you have put half a clip or more into them right? Oh no! Instead, the game will just decide to lag while you are shooting and by the time it stops lagging, you would of loaded your whole clip into them. Despite the few minor issues I experienced while playing online, the multiplayer is solid and can be fun if you have some friends to play with.
If you get bored with the standard multiplayer maps, you can always make your own maps using the Map Editor. Once you have been creative, play on your custom maps with friends! With the great variety of options on the map editor, I can see people getting very creative with the tool in the future.
Summary:
Overall, Far Cry 3 is an Excellent game which delivers everything stated on the box and much much more! The game totally caught me off guard, and truly deserves to be a contender for Game Of The Year. Despite the unoriginal multiplayer, Far Cry3 is one of the best games to hit consoles this year, and one of the best FPS experiences you can play to date.
