Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken has forever changed the way I look at chickens. This unique PSN title brings great fun for on the go with your PlayStation Vita. It could be better though!…
Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken isn’t just a side-scrolling action adventure game about flightless birds with jetpacks and weapons. It is about a fearless leader of a rebellion who is known as Hardboiled Chicken. A group of oddly humorous penguins occupy Albatropolis, their main goal is to brainwash and control all other birds in the area. So you take the role of Hardboiled Chicken and begin your relentless fight against the penguin resistance.
Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken was originally made for the PC, it was then ported to the PS3 and now has made it’s appearance on the PS Vita. Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken is a perfect fit for gaming on the go. With a total of 15 levels, about 8 hours of gameplay, this game is well worth the small price tag.
So what makes this game good? The gameplay is very well done and very strong. Controls are very crisp and fluent. This makes it easy to enjoy the game to it’s fullest potential. Throughout all this gameplay you will find yourself solving puzzles, shooting down groups of penguins, and of course some light platforming. I have no complaints with the gameplay at all, I just wish there was more! More content would make the title so much better, it left me wanting more.
Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken also brings some quirky humor to the table. It was entertaining to walk around and listen to some of the penguins conversations. It was just a small touch that makes the game what it is. I mean who can honestly take fighting chickens and penguins seriously!?
There is nothing hard about killing penguins, normal penguins that is! There are variations of penguins and they each take a different strategy in order to take them down. Some require you to roll past them and take them down from the back. I don’t want to spoil it too much so I will leave it at that, but killing enemies does take some planning and knowledge.
One thing I love about this game was the frequent checkpoints, it is perfect for picking up and playing on the go. Even if you only have enough time to play for a few minutes, you will most likely come across several checkpoints for you to pick back up at next time. Now there is a normal mode and a hardboiled mode, hardboiled mode is obviously more advanced. Normal mode though is quite easy, it makes for a fun playthrough. Hardboiled is so hard that I could barely get passed the second level. So you might want to think about that before starting out on Hardboiled mode.
The graphics here look good for a Vita title, everything is very crisp. I’m sure the graphics could be improved a little, but I honestly see no need for it. Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken looks great just the way it is. There should be no complaints when it comes to the visual appearance. It also has great looking cut scenes which are perfect for screenshots!
The music and sound effects also fit very well. The voice acting also fit very well with this game type.
Now there was one thing about Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken that was sort of disappointing. You have 3 weapon variations, a shotgun, handgun, and a rifle. You also get grenades and ‘brainbugs.’ Brainbugs can be used to control penguins, this is helpful when trying to solve puzzles and such. Sadly, I felt like it needed more variety when it came to weapons. Your grenades are infinite, but all of your firearms use the same ammo. So if you run out of ammo with your shotgun, you have no more ammo for any of your guns. Just a small thing that sort of bothered me.
Now one thing I was not able to try was co-op mode. I tried to get a couple friends together in order to test co-op mode before finishing this review, but sadly it didn’t work. So I can only comment on the fact that there is a co-op mode and that it looks very interesting.
Overall if you enjoy side scrolling action games, you will surely enjoy this. Most of the gameplay involves puzzles and shooting up some penguins, what could be better than that!? On a serious note, it does feel very short and left me wanting more, but it has a very affordable price tag.
+ Great solid gamplay
+ Frequent checkpoints for playing on the go
- Left me wanting more from the game
